About UsThe Australian Government and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) have recognised the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) as a particularly sensitive area requiring the highest possible level of environmental protection. The Australian Government has enacted legislation for compulsory pilotage in the Inner Route of the Great Barrier Reef between Cape York and Cairns and the Hydrographers Passage. Pilotage in other areas of the GBR including the Great North East Channel is recommended by IMO. Torres Pilots formerly Queensland Coastal Pilot Service (QCPS) provide professional licensed pilots in all areas of the Great Barrier Reef. The Director, Perry Sutton, has been directly involved with pilot service management for 27 years and the operations personnel have over over 10 years experience in both Australian and the international maritime industry. Torres Pilots presently have 30 contracted marine pilots licensed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. Pilots are only issued with a license after stringent compliance with Australian Government legislation and regulation which determine high standards for qualifications, experience, health and training. Additionally, pilots contracted to this Service are only appointed. from command and require navigating experience in vessels transiting the GBR. Service pilots are resident in Torres Strait and Queensland ports including Thursday Island, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Gladstone and Brisbane. Pilots are available from all Queensland ports and fairways. The position of designated pilot boarding grounds and services available in other areas are described in the next section. Torres Pilots has been certified to AS/NZS ISO 9001 : 2000 Quality Assurance by the internationally recognised maritime certification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV). Torres Pilots has been issued with a certificate of compliance with the Great Barrier Reef Pilotage Safety Management Code by AMSA.
